About this dojo.

Established in Sumner Park in 1993, Kansai Karate’s Headquarters (Honbu Dojo) has been a cornerstone of martial arts training in Brisbane’s western suburbs for more than three decades.

The dojo has become an important part of the local community, bringing together families from across Brisbane through a shared commitment to personal growth, respect and excellence. Whether students are training for self-defence, fitness, competition or personal development, the Sumner Park Headquarters continues to uphold the traditional values of karate while delivering world-class instruction in a modern and inclusive setting.

Programs at Sumner Park.

Cubs (Ages 3 - 4)

First steps onto the mat. Listening, taking turns, focus, coordination – the foundations that make lessons (on and off the mat!) easier.

Little Lions (Ages 5 - 7)

Where discipline and confidence starts. A full-body workout that builds focus and self-belief; plus the kind of martial arts moves they can’t wait to show you on the way home!

Juniors (Ages 8 - 12)

The skills they’ll keep long after the lesson ends. Yes, they’ll learn self-defence. More importantly, they’ll build the resilience, focus and self-respect that carry them through high school and beyond.

Teen Karate (Ages 13+)

An outlet for the energy and weight teenagers carry. Our classes are designed and taught just for them, away from the under-12 classes.

Adult Karate

A workout that hits, and a room you’ll want to come back to! Lose weight, build muscle, learn to defend yourself, and make friends. No previous experience needed.

Kansai Sports Karate

Our competition pathway. Expect advanced sparring and tournament prep – for students of any age who’ve decided to push past the standard curriculum.

I quit the sport almost 20 yrs ago but decided to come back after my daughter started in the cubs classes. So glad I did. The club is by far the most inclusive, all abilities, supportive training environment I've ever participated in. For a mum, in her thirties, with injuries, and a busy life, going to training even once a week has been magic for my self confidence, fitness, and overall well being. I started out unfit and unsure and have quickly built a great group of friends and a set of skills that will set me up for the next decade of my life. I've tried five different martial arts over the years, but this is the first dojo where I have felt accepted and connected. If you're a curious adult, a mum coming back after kids, or you just want to do a sport that will set you up for life, give this a go. You don't have to be sporty, or outgoing, or even that coordinated. Everyone has a place on the mat.

I’ve been taking lessons at Kansai for nearly 4 years now and I couldnt recommend this dojo and their lovely instructors and staff enough. From day one, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, the classes are fun and challenging in the best ways possible, and the community around the dojo are some of the best people you’ll ever meet. Kansai Karate Academy has greatly helped me with my confidence as well as my fitness. I’ve learned so much from these wonderful people and if you’re thinking about joining - Definitely do it! Your body and mind will thank you for it!

We had heard good things about Kensai Karate but have been taken back by the professionalism and inclusiveness of this academy. Our 17 year old daughter (who is not sporty and has anxiety) loves going and is making great progress. She’s become more confident too. Thanks Steve and your amazing team.
